I'm on my way to New York, and far from my research texts, but I've been meaning for some time to post this link to an excellent short French video about Madame de Montespan: "Louis XIV et Madame de Montespan."

I think she’s a complex and compelling woman, Fiona. I suspect she grew, over time, to have a problem with her appetites: for gambling, food, power and possibly alcohol. But very intelligent and with truly innovative taste.
